PIPEX Dial Global Roaming
Global Roaming is an optional service for PIPEX Dial subscribers. It offers easier and lower cost Internet access for the international traveller.
Now, when you want to connect to the PIPEX Dial service while travelling abroad, you can dial one of a number of Points of Presence, located in major population centres around the world. All PoPs are centrally managed, delivering the same quality of service and performance that you have come to expect here in the UK.
Although the service is NOT included in the basic PIPEX Dial subscription price, compared with the cost of international telephone calls back to the UK it offers significant cost savings and added convenience.
Charges for the service only occur when you use it. Even when you have requested the Global Roaming facility for your PIPEX Dial account and if you then chose not to use it, it won't cost you anything.

How does Global Roaming work?
The Global Roaming facility is charged on a pay-by-use basis, with a minimum charge for any month in which it is used. This means that, unlike your PIPEX Dial subscription which offers you completely unlimited use for a flat fee, Global Roaming charges will be variable, the actual amount depending upon how much you use the service.
Charges for the service are collected monthly in arrears by either Direct Debit or Credit Card. Consequently, the service is ONLY available for customers who pay for PIPEX Dial using either of these payment methods.

The service is suitable for users of PIPEX Dial software version 4, version 5, version 6, and Account Only customers who are using Windows Dial-up Networking. Other software,including earlier versions of PIPEX Dial software, will not be suitable for use with Global Roaming. |
Account Only customers should follow the set-up instructions within the alternative connections section to configure their computers for the service.
Once activated, you will be able to log into any of the Points of Presence around the globe. International PoP phone numbers are now available as an on-line upgrade for Dial 4 software users. PIPEX Dial version 6 software includes a phone book facility which contains all of the PIPEX international PoP's available.
Activating A Dial Account For Global Roaming
In order to ensure that Global Roaming charges are not incurred without your authorisation, all PIPEX Dial subscribers need to request the facility for their account. By default, Global Roaming is not activated.
As the service is only charged on those occasions when you use the facility, it costs you nothing to request Global Roaming. If you think that one day you might want to use your PIPEX Dial account when abroad, it makes sense to set the account up today so that you don't forget later.
We will activate Global Roaming for you on your request. It's as simple as contacting the PIPEX Billing team (0845 077 2455). We will confirm that a monthly payment method is in place before including your details in the regular system update. For your reassurance, please ensure that this is done at least 48 hours before you travel.
Support
Support will continue to be provided from the UK. If you encounter problems accessing the service while you're abroad, you will need to contact PIPEX Technical Support during UK support hours. Our offices in other countries will not have access to your personal information, and so will not be in a position to help.
In order to minimise the risk of you encountering any problems while away from home, we have provided a checklist that you can print out before you leave the UK.
Pricing
Global Roaming, unlike the basic PIPEX Dial subscription, is charged on a pay-by-use basis. You will be charged a variable amount only when you use the Global Roaming facility.
For any month in which you roam:
Minimum charge of £5 + VAT - This will cover up to two hours spent online in that month.
For any time spent online over two hours, you will be charged £2.50 + VAT per hour, which will be charged in 6 minute increments at 25p + VAT.
There are no standing charges for months in which you don't roam.
Charges are calculated for each calendar month. If your overseas trip extends over more than one calendar month, you will be charged at least the minimum charge of £5.00 for each month that you roam. (Note: a new month starts on the 1st of the month, at 12.00 midnight in local time for the country you're in.)
In addition to the PIPEX Global Roaming Charges, a charge will be made for line usage by the telephone service provider of the country you are in.
A full breakdown of usage will be available for users who exceed two hours on-line in any month.
Access To Internet Services While Roaming
Once logged into a PIPEX global Point of Presence, you will be able to send and retrieve your email, send and receive files, browse the web and generally use all of the same services that you would at home.
The exceptions to this are:
- You will need to make a small change to your e-mail program to SEND e-mail while roaming;
- You will be unable to access NEWSGROUPS while roaming.
If you want to SEND e-mail when roaming, you will need to make a small change to your e-mail program when you roam between countries. This involves changing the name of the "SMTP Server" - the mail server that your computer uses to send e-mail - in your e-mail program. See the checklist for details of how to do this.
You do not need to make any changes in order to RECEIVE e-mail while roaming.
The PIPEX Dial news server can only be accessed by connecting to the Internet via UK PoPs; it will not be accessible when connecting through other PIPEX PoPs. If you require access to news while abroad, you will need to point your news-reading software to another news machine which will grant you access.
Specification For PIPEX International PoPs
Whilst the network that underpins the PIPEX Dial Global Roaming service is continually expanding in global coverage and improving in performance, the maximum modem speed supported will vary from country to country. Each International PoP currently supports modem speeds up to at least 28.8 Kbps.
ISDN is not supported by the Global Roaming service.
PIPEX cannot guarantee the availability of any PoP, though in all cases PIPEX will endeavour to give a minimum of one month's warning of any planned PoP closure. Access numbers are also liable to change from time to time. Please refer to the International PoP list for the current details before you travel.
